Karen and I really enjoy traveling to and meeting people from to offbeat places. We had each independently gone to Europe during college and later of course became engaged at treetops in Kenya.
My experiences working in Switzerland the summer before my graduation are presented under "my story. Karen's first trip to Europe was in the summer before her graduation and she demonstrated her wonderful courage and independence by striking out alone after her traveling companion left her for coursework. In addition to courage and curiosity Karen is the best tour guide and travel agent anyone could have. For the most part she has undertaken all the research and planning that have enabled us to make the following trips. Of course our first trip to East Africa was my doing. Other trips to Europe include a wonderful barge trip through the canals and rivers of the French wine country with Karen's dad George and my good friend Todd and Ronnie Anderson we visited the famous wineries and had a final dinner in the Marco Polo restaurant near the top of the Eiffel Tower. Son David came along as Georg'es roommate and we had a splendid time. Another time we rented a villa atop a small mountain in a charming town called Pedona. From there I drove to the nearby town of Pietrasanta where I worked in a foundry to complete a bronze portrait bust of my father Martin (see photo in sculptures) under the gentle guidance of Bruno Lucchesi. David and Constance spent some time with us at the Villa and Sarah was able to come over for a few days for my birthday. Bruno was good enough to take us to his hometown Luca where he humbly showed us the altar that he had been commissioned to do for their great cathedral dating from the 12th century. It was a great summer, we traveled to northern coast to the five towns and the southern coast to Capri, another wonderful milestone was the return to Linkava Lithuania (my father's hometown) which is mentioned at the beginning of the story. It was a sobering experience to learn that all the Jews had been killed when the country was overrun first by the Russians then by the Nazis. It gave an important beginning to my father's life and illuminated the start of the Freedman story in America. We visited the other Baltic countries Latvia and Estonia and on a separate trip visited Russia Moscow and St. Petersburg. Then there were several cruises to the Greek islands with visits to Athens, Thessalonica, the Corinth Canal,, Mycenae and Epedaruis. We have traveled several times with Travel Dynamics to these places but also sailed from Kos a (bareboat on a leopard 38) with friends Peter and Sally, Todd and Ronnie and Jason and Linda.
Antarctica
most of these traveling companions and several others joined to share and especially unique experience with a visit to Antarctica. Once again travel dynamics aboard the Corinthian we left from Ouishia crossed the infamous Drakes passage with mild 5 to 10 foot seas and made landfall at multiple spots along the island chain and mainland. Lots and lots of penguins: fearless, nesting, with adorable chicks and foul-smelling excrement.
